Therapeutic and pharmacological effects:
- Therapeutic Implications of RJ
- Immune System Support: Boosts the immune system by stimulating the production of immune cells, such as lymphocytes and macrophages, enhancing overall immune function and the body’s ability to response to infections.
- Chronic Diarrhea: Exhibits anti-diarrheal properties due to the antimicrobial activity of royalisin and royalactin.

- Anti-inflammatory Effects: Components such as 10-Hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) have demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce inflammation in conditions such as arthritis and skin irritations.
- Neuroprotective Effects: Compounds like 10-HDA and royalisin have neuroprotective properties, potentially enhancing the survival of nerve cells in various conditions.
A deficiency in Vitamin C occurs when the body does not receive the required amount through food and lacks sufficient reserves of this vitamin. Additionally, air pollution, smoking, fighting certain diseases and infections, and type 2 diabetes increase the body’s need for this vitamin.
Vitamin C plays a crucial role in many physiological and metabolic processes. In addition to its antioxidant effects and protection against free radicals, this vitamin is key to the proper functioning of immune system cells.
Zinc is an essential element involved in many biological processes in the body. Zinc deficiency is often caused by insufficient intake through diet or poor absorption of this nutrient.
Side effects:
Side effects such as stomach irritation, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, headache, hot flashes, and flank pain may rarely occur. High doses of Vitamin C can lead to hyperoxaluria (increased oxalate excretion in urine), which may increase the risk of forming oxalate stones.
Orally and topically, royal jelly seems to be well tolerated.
Most Common Adverse Effects:
- Orally: Dyspnea, eczema, oral allergy syndrome, pruritus, and urticaria in people with a history of asthma or atopy.
- Topically: Contact dermatitis and skin irritation.
Drug interactions:
Products containing zinc sulfate should be taken with proper timing to avoid interactions:
- At least 2 hours apart from bisphosphonates and tetracyclines.
- 3 hours apart from cephalexin.
- 1 hour apart from penicillamine.
- 2-4 hours before or 6-8 hours after fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, gemifloxacin, moxifloxacin, and ofloxacin.
Additionally, due to the presence of vitamin C, this product may interact with estrogen derivatives and aluminum hydroxide.
Theoretically, royal jelly might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs. Royal jelly might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with warfarin.
Warnings and precautions:
In cases of renal failure, the continuous use of aluminum-containing medications, such as aluminum hydroxide, as well as a history of oxalate stones, hemochromatosis, and favism, should be undertaken with caution and under a physician’s supervision.
Contraindications:
Royal jelly can cause allergic symptoms including pruritus, urticaria, eczema, eyelid and facial edema, conjunctivitis, rhinorrhea, dyspnea, and asthma exacerbations in people with asthma.
