Therapeutic and pharmacological effects:
L-carnitine is synthesized in the brain, liver, and kidneys of humans from two amino acids methionine and lysine. It plays a key role in breaking down fatty acids to provide energy for cells by transporting them into the mitochondria, the cellular organelles responsible for energy production. Additionally, L-carnitine helps to remove toxic compounds produced by the mitochondria, preventing the accumulation of toxins within the cells.
It accumulates in tissues such as skeletal and cardiac muscles, which rely on fatty acids for energy. This substance has wide-ranging effects on metabolism and energy supply within the body. Furthermore, by impacting sperm cells, L-carnitine can enhance sperm strength, motility, and count, thereby improving fertility.
Side effects:
- Oral consumption of L-carnitine may cause side effects, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, heartburn, gastritis, diarrhea, and headaches.
- To minimize gastrointestinal side effects, it is recommended to take it with or after meals.
