Therapeutic and pharmacological effects:
Fatty acids are the building blocks of lipids, which are divided into two types saturated and unsaturated in terms of chemical structure. The two main categories of unsaturated fatty acids are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are beneficial for the health of the body.
There are many types of omega-3 fatty acids, and the three main types in the diet are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
DHA is a type of long-chain omega-3 found in salmon, tuna, sardines, and oysters, as well as in the oily seeds of plants such as flax, chia, and walnuts.
DHA is one of the essential components of phospholipids in the cell membrane. Also, it has an important role in the development of the nervous system in the brain and retina, especially from the third trimester of pregnancy through to three years of age.
Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant (protects cells from damage and oxidative stress) and may enhance the immune system.
Vitamin A is another essential fat-soluble vitamin in the body that is crucial for growth, development, vision maintenance, and immune system enhancement. Therefore, its deficiency could lead to a decrease in resistance to infections, night blindness, and stunted growth.
Calcium is a crucial mineral for maintaining bone health throughout life. On the other hand, vitamin D can help calcium absorption in the intestine; therefore, it impacts the homeostasis of calcium in the body. Additionally, infants and children have a higher need for vitamin D because of the physiological demands during growth and development as well as the low vitamin D content in breast milk. As a result, deficiency of this vitamin is common during this stage.
Severe and prolonged vitamin D3 deficiency in children leads to rickets, a bone-softening disease, while in adults it can cause osteomalacia. Among the elderly, it increases the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. Vitamin D3 is also crucial for supporting immune function and muscle activity and may help lower the risk of various cancers and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS). Moreover, it may reduce the risk of heart conditions such as congestive heart failure (CHF) and high blood pressure (hypertension), as well as decrease the likelihood of diabetes and hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol).
Side effects:
There are no observed side effects in therapeutic doses.
DHA has no side effects up to 3 mg. The most common side effects of DHA are fishy taste, dry mouth, belching, loose stools, and loss of appetite.

Also, due to the presence of DHA, it may interact with anticoagulants, blood pressure-lowering, and blood-sugar-lowering medications. Therefore, if taken concurrently with any of these medications, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
