Packaging and Dosage Form:
30-ml oral suspension drop with a graduated dropper and patient information leaflet.
Therapeutic and pharmacological effects:
The most common reason for anemia is iron deficiency. Iron is a mineral that the body needs for growth and development. Using iron, our body synthesizes hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body) and myoglobin (a protein that is primarily found in muscles that help them access oxygen). Also, our body needs iron for the synthesis of some hormones. Body demands for iron in breastfed infants increase after four months of age. As a result, to supply the iron needed by children, supplements should be used. Prolonged iron deficiency may induce some problems in children’s physical development and neurological, mental, cognitive, behavioral, and memory development.
A liposome is a drug delivery system in which active pharmaceutical ingredients are encapsulated inside very small lipid particles to form a liposomal molecule. This dosage form absorbs more easily in the body; as a result, a higher concentration of the drug reaches the target organs.
Due to the lack of direct contact of iron with the digestive system, liposomal iron does not have the common gastrointestinal side effects such as the metallic taste, constipation, and stomach pain. Also, it affects the gums and teeth minimally and does not cause black teeth. Of note, it has no interaction with other drugs and foods, such as dairy products and milk.
Side effects:
The common gastrointestinal side effects of iron are abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. In the liposomal form, iron ions do not come into direct contact with the mucous membrane of the digestive system, and its common gastrointestinal side effects are minimized.
Drug interactions:
Unlike other iron products, iron liposomal formulation will not interact with medications such as antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs); therefore, there is no need to maintain a 2-hour time gap between consumption. Liposomal iron has less interaction with food and can be taken with dairy products.
Warnings and precautions:
Individuals with normal iron levels should not use iron supplements regularly. In premature infants with low vitamin E levels, consult a healthcare provider before administration.
Use the graduated dropper to ensure the correct dosage.
Accidental overdose of iron can lead to poisoning in children, so avoid exceeding the prescribed dosage and keep out of reach of children.
Contraindications:
Do not use this product if you have hemochromatosis (iron overload), hemosiderosis (excessive accumulation of iron deposits), or hemolytic anemia, or if you have a history of hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients used in this product.
Storage conditions:
Store at a temperature below 25°C, away from light, and moisture, and out of reach of children.
