Therapeutic and pharmacological effects:

Melatonin dietary supplements can be derived from animals or microorganisms, but they are often synthetically produced. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain in response to darkness. This hormone regulates the body’s circadian rhythm, endocrine secretions, and sleep patterns. Exposure to light at night can stop the production of melatonin.

Side effects:

Melatonin is generally safe for most adults when used short-term or even long-term. However, it can cause side effects such as headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, and nausea. Avoid driving and operating machinery for 4 to 5 hours after taking melatonin.

Drug interactions:

Melatonin interacts with anticoagulants and warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Caffeine can affect melatonin levels in the body, while oral contraceptives can elevate these levels.

The simultaneous use of melatonin with anticonvulsant medications (due to an increase in the frequency and severity of seizures), antidiabetic medications (due to an increased risk of hypoglycemia), antihypertensive medications (due to disruption of blood pressure regulation), fluvoxamine (due to an increase in melatonin levels), benzodiazepines (due to their sedative effects and potential reduction in brain function), and immunosuppressive drugs (due to an increase in immune response) is not recommended.

Warnings and precautions:

In individuals under 20 years of age, it should be taken under medical supervision.
Avoid driving or operating sensitive machinery for up to 5 hours after consumption.
If taking other medications or having conditions such as diabetes, liver diseases, glaucoma, high blood pressure, epilepsy, or depression, consult with a doctor or pharmacist before use.

Contraindications:

It should not be taken simultaneously with immunosuppressive drugs.
